San Pedro in its current state owes its existence to Manuel Gutiérrez de la Concha e Irigoyen (1808-1874), the first Marqués del Duero, who created a farming colony on the spot in the early 1860s, naming it after both his favouritesaint and his mother, Petra de Alcántara Irigoyen. The settlement was built for workers of the sugar cane and cotton plantations. Sugar mill building has preserved to nowadays. San Pedro has become a first-class tourist destination and highly sought-after area for living, with variety of luxury developments, golf courses, sandy beaches, magnificent infrastructure, numerous amenities and international schools. There is also important cultural heritage sites in the area.

San Pedro de Alcántara’s beach is bordered by wonderful sea boulevard, stretching from Lindavista Baja to Puerto Banus and further to Marbella. It takes 15-20min to walk from San Pedro to Puerto Banus. The sea boulevard is very popular among residents and guests, there are some sporting facilities installed by Townhall on the boulevard and one can find numerous beach bars and chiringuitos to stop for a drink or lunch.

San Pedro de Alcántara´s Boulevard is of recent construction, it is separating the centre of the town and the beachside residential areas, the N340 coastal road what used to cross the town is now taken underground, into tunnel. This way it was created extensive area with pedestrian bridges and walkways, parks & water features, restuarants and children playgrounds for enjoyment of the residents and guests. The Boulevard is one of the favorite places for walks and family meetings.

The visit to historical center of San Pedro is recommended, one can appreciate the typical Mediterranean architecture including the town church built in 1869 by the Marqués del Duero. Paleocristiana termas

Paleo-Christian basilica of San Pedro de Alcántara is one of the oldest examples of the Christian church, of the Iberian Peninsula and its approximate dating is in the sixth century. In this place there was a miscegenation of cultures that was distributed among the Romans, the Visigoths and the Byzantines. The structure of the basilica itself, of which only remains are left, accounts for its glorious past, as well as, the impressive baptismal font in it and a set of tombs that are scattered around it.

The Basilica bath of  San Pedro is the first spa originally from the Costa del Sol.
